ROBIN DAY Series E Side Chair Linking
The "Series E" stacking chair, designed by the master of British modern design, Robin Day, is made of injection-molded polypropylene. Often called the "British Eames," this stylish yet low-cost British school chair was designed in 1971 by Robin Day, a leading British designer of the mid-century period. Designed ergonomically as a school chair, it combines durability and safety. It boasts reliable quality, meeting stringent European standards for chairs in educational institutions. While achieving thorough cost reduction, this chair doesn't feel cheap and has been loved worldwide for over 50 years since its design. This is a linking type that allows horizontal connection. The linking mechanism employs a unique method devised by Robin Day; chairs can be connected simply by dropping the adjacent chair into the linking bracket, and detached by lifting the chair from the linking bracket, making for a simple structure. The seat uses high-quality polypropylene, which offers both appropriate impact resistance and robustness. The rectangular hole with rounded corners in the center, a distinctive design feature, not only makes it easy to carry but also reduces weight by minimizing the amount of polypropylene used. The PP (polypropylene) used for the shell was a cutting-edge material at the time. In 1963, HILLE and Robin Day developed the first injection-molded PP polypropylene chair, achieving mass production. Along with the Series E, this product was instrumental in Robin Day being dubbed the "British Eames." Today, injection-molded chairs are common, and PP chairs are frequently seen in everyday life. However, the Series E, being lightweight, durable, and available at an affordable price from its inception, can be said to embody Robin Day's design philosophy of popularizing modern design for the masses.Source: https://metrocs.jp/
