This lighting series utilizes the techniques of "Gifu lanterns," a specialty of Gifu that has been around since the Edo period and was designated a national "traditional craft" in 1995. It was created by Shigeru Uchida, who introduced Japan's traditional beauty to the world through a traveling exhibition of his foldable teahouses, "Juan, Soan, and Gyoan," which he introduced in the 1990s to European art museums.
