Breuer Collection Wassily Chair
The world's first chair made from steel pipes was designed by Marcel Breuer in 1925, and became a pioneer of modernist design. The distinctive steel pipe base, said to have been inspired by bicycle manufacturing methods, is made with precise techniques to combine durability and beauty in a simple shape. The simple and streamlined design, made only of lines and surfaces, with leather stretched over a bent steel pipe frame, may appear unstable at first glance, but when you sit on it, you feel as if your body is floating. The Wassily Chair, which combined innovative materials and design, made a huge impact on the furniture design world at the time and is the foundation of modern design. It was not well received at the time it was released because it was too avant-garde, but the abstract painter Wassily Kandisky, who was a close friend of his at the Bauhaus, praised the work so highly that it was named after him, "Wassily Chair."
