ADJUSTABLE TABLE E1027
ADJUSTABLE TABLE may be a classic among classics. Its unique and perfectly balanced form made this height-adjustable table one of the most popular design icons of the 20th century. The name comes from the summer house "E.1027" that architect and designer Eileen Gray built in the south of France for herself and her collaborator Jean Badovici. E stands for Eileen, 10 for Jean (J is the 10th letter of the alphabet), 2 for Badovici (B is the 2nd letter), and 7 for Gray's secret code name (G is the 7th letter). The "Adjustable Table E1027" was designed for this summer house. In the 1920s, Eileen Gray designed many variations of the "Adjustable Table E1027". In the course of trial and error with the design of the table, she used a black metal top to replace the crystal glass top and selected a black frame. The matt black lacquer accentuates the lines and form of the table, a version that Eileen Gray considered particularly elegant. When Zeev Aram and Eileen Gray worked together in the 1970s to develop the "Adjustable Table E1027", they first introduced the chrome version, intending to introduce a black frame later.
