Ulm Stool
The Ulm School of Design, which opened in Ulm, West Germany in 1953, was an innovative educational institution that inherited the ideas of the Bauhaus. In 1954, Max Bill, the first president of the university, and Hans Gujoro, who was Bill's assistant at the time, came up with the idea of a tool for students to sit on. The Ulm Stool was born by consolidating multipurpose elements into the design, such as a stool that can be used at a desk, lectures, or on a cafe terrace, a side table, a carrying function, and a tray for books. It is said to be a symbolic stool that inherited the concept of Bauhaus as it is, with unnecessary functions and designs eliminated. At the time, the stool was used in a wide range of places at the Ulm School of Design, including as a chair, a side desk, a step stool, and for carrying textbooks. The stool's minimalist design reflects the rational and functional ideas of the Bauhaus, and its extremely simple U-shape shines with its functional beauty without waste. It can be used in different ways, such as upside down, and the horizontal bar can be used as a handle when carrying it. The body is made of light and flexible spruce, and at approximately 2.5 kg, even a woman can easily carry it with one hand. The Ulm stool is made using a timber frame construction method that does not use any nails. The seat and side boards are joined using a method called "kumizushi", a woodworking technique that provides excellent strength and prevents warping and twisting. The horizontal bars are joined using "wedge joints". Unlike the unpainted regular model and color model, all parts of the walnut model are manufactured from solid walnut.
