AA STOOL by Karimoku
This simple stool, which looks like the letter "A" when viewed from the side, is the first product of Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku. Two chairs are stacked together to form one unit, but they can also be used individually when guests come or in a small space. The original Ishinomaki Laboratory was made from 26 x 90 mm deck material, but the redesign, which incorporates Karimoku's technology, uses hardwood boards that are thinner than the deck material. This stool allows you to enjoy the careful assembly and finish, as well as the texture of the unique wood species. The original is unpainted, but the color variations add an even fresher impression. In addition to its versatility for home use, it can be connected horizontally in an office conference room to create a counter for storing luggage, or disassembled to use as stool seats when additional people are present. Ishinomaki Laboratory was established in 2011 with the aim of reconstruction after the earthquake. Even though the memories of the earthquake have faded, the lives of the people in the affected areas will continue. To continue and further develop their activities, Ishinomaki Laboratory has partnered with Karimoku, a leading Japanese wooden furniture manufacturer, for a new step forward. Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku takes the rough and powerful image of Ishinomaki Laboratory's products and uses Karimoku's advanced woodworking and painting techniques to bring out new appeal through precise construction and modern coloring while still taking advantage of the original qualities. This makes it easier to incorporate the products into spaces with different styles than before, greatly expanding the scope of their use. Karimoku is working to address the issues facing Japan's forests, such as the sustainable use of domestic timber, and the resulting forest conservation and revitalization of the forestry industry. Ishinomaki Laboratory's products are characterized by their design, which can be used with any material, based on the original idea of "making do with the materials at hand." This collaboration will actively utilize wood that is not normally considered suitable for furniture use, such as scraps generated during production at Karimoku's factories, a variety of hardwoods that have not been used much due to limited commercial demand, and wood that has insect bites or holes drilled by woodpeckers and other birds. Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku aims to contribute to a rich society that accepts diversity by utilizing materials that were difficult for Karimoku to use through Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku products, including the stories surrounding them.
