When Mogensen stepped down as the first president of FDB Möbler, Mogensen's close friend Hans J. Wegner recommended Paul M. Volta to take on the important role of second president. He was a furniture craftsman who had trained in Hans Olsen's workshop and was extremely skilled in furniture making. Volta inherited Mogensen's belief that "furniture makes people happy" and designed the J46 by further removing decoration from the Windsor chair and following the tradition of the simple and easy-to-process Swedish peg chair. Its ease of use and simple, beautiful design were quickly accepted by the Danish people at the time, and it became FDB Möbler's number one hit in Denmark at the time, surpassing Mogensen. The number of chairs was 850,000, and it is said that one in five Danes at the time owned one. While Mogensen and Wegner are well-known in Japan, Volta, FDB Möbler's biggest hit, is also highly regarded, and the J46 is one of the earliest pieces of furniture produced when FDB Möbler was revived, as it is one of the most familiar to the Danish people.
