ISHINOMAKI BENCH by Karimoku
The Ishinomaki Bench was originally designed as a bench for an outdoor movie theater for citizens, and was made by students of Ishinomaki Technical High School at a workshop held by Ishinomaki Laboratory. Later, in a workshop held by Herman Miller, an American furniture manufacturer, 25 benches were made together with people living in temporary housing around Ishinomaki. In the redesign incorporating Karimoku's technology, instead of simply reproducing the blueprints of Ishinomaki Laboratory, they explored the thickness that would be structurally viable by using deciduous broadleaf wood. The Ishinomaki Bench has a slimmer impression than the original. The original is unpainted, but the color variations add a fresh impression. Ishinomaki Laboratory was established in 2011 with the aim of recovering from the earthquake. Even if the memories of the earthquake fade, the lives of the people in the affected areas continue. In order to continue and further develop their activities, Ishinomaki Laboratory has taken a new step in collaboration with Karimoku, Japan's leading wooden furniture manufacturer. Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku brings out new appeal through the refined construction and modern coloring while taking advantage of the rough and powerful image of Ishinomaki Laboratory's products, by finishing them with Karimoku's high woodworking and painting techniques. This makes it easier to incorporate the products into spaces with different styles than before, greatly expanding the scope of use for the products. Karimoku is working on the issues facing Japan's forests, such as the sustainable and effective use of domestic timber, and the resulting forest conservation and revitalization of the forestry industry. Ishinomaki Laboratory's products are characterized by their design that can be used with any material, based on the original idea of "doing something with the materials at hand." In this collaboration, we will actively use wood that is not normally considered suitable for furniture, such as scraps generated during production at Karimoku's factories, various hardwoods that have not been used much because of limited commercial demand, and wood that has insect bites or holes drilled by birds such as woodpeckers. Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku aims to contribute to a rich society that accepts diversity by utilizing materials that were difficult for Karimoku to use, including the stories behind them, through Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku products. Ishinomaki Laboratory's original version is also available. Ishinomaki Laboratory | Ishinomaki Bench Source: https://flymee.jp/
