Chaise Tout Bois
Vitra has reissued Chaise t'oe Bois by French architect Jean Prouvé. It is faithful to the original 1941 design, without screws, but the size and seat height have been adjusted to suit modern living. It is available in two colors: natural oak and dark oak. Chaise t'oe Bois is very similar in design to Prouvé's masterpiece Standard, designed a few years before the Second World War. Due to the shortage of metal during the war, Prouvé completed this chair using only wood, as its name, which means all-wood chair in French, suggests. Prouvé believed that when a person sits on a chair, the weight on the legs is not constant, and that the weight is greater on the rear legs than on the front legs. This idea is reflected in the design of Chaise t'oe Bois, which is based on the extremely rational idea that the maximum load is placed on the point where the rear frame and the seat are joined, so a sturdy frame that also serves as the rear legs is used to reinforce the chair and support the load on the entire chair. This is a typical feature of Prouvé's furniture and architecture. Prouvé made several prototypes during the war, testing the structural strength, joints, leg position, and angle of the seat and back, but was forced to choose materials from available wood. After the war ended and there was a sufficient supply of wood, he decided to manufacture the chaise te bois from oak. In France, oak is often used for the roofs of ships and cathedrals, and its hardness and strength as a chair material are excellent. In response to individual requests, chairs with a dark stain finish were also manufactured. In 1947, Prouvé entered a chaise te bois in the Meubles de France competition and won the grand prize. The theme was to create attractive, high-quality, mass-produced furniture for people in housing difficulties and young couples who were starting their own homes to meet the needs of post-war society.
