EVOQ, developed by Vitra in collaboration with Jasper Morrison, is the world's first cantilever chair made entirely of plastic. By utilizing the latest injection molding technology, we have achieved strength and flexibility comparable to that of steel tubes, using only plastic. The load is supported by hollow tubular legs, passing through a seamless one-piece structure from the backrest to the seat and from the seat to the legs. Jasper Morrison's aim was to eliminate all unnecessary details. The silhouette and appearance of EVOQ, formed from a single material, are clean and simple, giving a sense of unity and completeness as a product. Even when no one is sitting on it and it is just there, it is as beautiful as a sculpture and blends unobtrusively into the space. Along with its ergonomic performance, it also has a visual lightness that is greater than that of previous cantilever chairs made of steel tubes. The range of motion of the backrest is more flexible than that of steel tubes. The typical cantilever seating, which is created by the seat and backrest tilting and bending when seated, is now especially enhanced in comfort and freedom of movement in the Evoq. At Vitra, recyclability is a prerequisite when using plastics. Furthermore, since the Evoq is made of a single material, it can be easily recycled without the need to disassemble the different parts. The idea came to me when I was making some sketches of what the chair should look like. It took five years from the first sketch to the launch of the Evo-C, which is not surprising given the innovation that the design required in science and manufacturing.
