This is a five-shade version of the Enigma 425, designed by Japanese designer Shoichi Uchiyama in 2003, with increased size and light output to fit restaurants, offices, and public spaces with slightly higher ceilings than average homes. The five acrylic shades are suspended by ultra-thin wires, delivering plenty of soft, transmitted light downwards. The top surface of the shade that receives the light directly from the light source is matte finished, while the bottom surface is glossy. The impression of the light sculpture gives the lighting a sophisticated Japanese minimalism. The design proposed by the designer to Louis Poulsen was a light and transparent style in which multiple shades suspended by ultra-thin wires appear to float. The idea was not only consistent with Louis Poulsen's design philosophy, but also a new interpretation of the multiple shade system that blocks glare. It is a fusion of Japanese elegant beauty and Scandinavian simplicity. Enigma means "mystery," but it was named because the shades appear to be floating in the air when lit from a distance.
