The design is based on Poul Henningsen's original drawings from the 1920s and early 30s, and is a faithful reproduction of his famous "Three Shade PH Lamp". This version features a hand-blown glass shade. Poul Henningsen carried out repeated optical calculations and tests. The shape of the shade was determined by how the light would be reflected and shaped on the shade, but above all it was designed to be glare-free. The milky glass shade gives the lamp a soft look and illuminates the surroundings with a glare-free light that only a three-shade PH lamp can produce. Each shade is made of three layers of milky blown glass, with a glossy exterior and a sandblasted matte interior that reflects and diffuses a soft light that is pleasant to the eye. "The shade shape uses a logarithmic spiral curve, and three of these shades are combined to cut the bright light (glare) from the bulb, while at the same time efficiently reflecting the light to the place and direction where it is needed."
