PH 5-4 1/2
The PH lamp is designed for use at high positions. The large top shade is for a wide horizontal light distribution. It is designed for clear light bulbs with a point source, and by aligning the light source in the correct position, the four shades receive the light properly and completely eliminate glare. It is also a suitable size for ambient lighting in residential spaces. The original sketch was made in 1931. The PH four-shade lamp is designed to illuminate surrounding walls and shelves more brightly than a standard three-shade lamp by increasing the amount of light reflected horizontally. The lamp was removed from the Louis Poulsen catalogue in the 1940s, but was reproduced in 1979 by two Danish architects, Sofus Franssen and Ebbe Christensen, as a large version of the 6 1/2-6 for the Charlottenborg Exhibition in Copenhagen. To completely eliminate the glare reflected from inside the bulb, the two architects added a small blue shade to the design. The four shades are painted matt white to provide a more uniform and pleasant reflected light. In 1984, a smaller version, the 5-4 1/2, was produced to light the Aarhus Concert Hall.
