Jean Prouvé, a French designer who had a major influence on 20th century architecture and industrial design, designed this modular wall shelf in 1936 for an educational facility in Metz, France. Modular wall shelves are common in early 20th century interiors. The two vertical wall brackets are made of steel sheets that have been painted after bending. The streamlined form and processing method, reminiscent of the rudders of airplanes and ships, are characteristic designs that Prouvé repeatedly applied to various products. The metal brackets are notched and solid wood shelves are inserted horizontally. The beautiful design, which combines the contrasting materials of wood and steel, is both sculptural and practical.
