KOSON Pomegranate and Parrot
This art panel pays homage to the work of Ohara Koson, a Kanazawa-born painter who was active from the late Meiji period to the early Showa period. Koson's work is a traditional style reminiscent of ukiyo-e, but has a modern beauty in its high realism and sophisticated composition. Hakuichi has been inspired by Koson's work and has recreated it as a foil art piece. While expressing the lively figures of animals, the foil background brings out a new charm. The size of the piece is like a tanzaku paper, creating a modern atmosphere that matches modern interiors. The foil in the background is made using a technique that overlaps foils of different thicknesses. The beautiful colors that are characteristic of Koson are reproduced as they are, and the work incorporates Hakuichi's unique techniques, such as raising the picture in three dimensions and adding a gloss that makes the colors stand out even more. Pomegranate and Parrot Pomegranate and Parrot was exhibited at the International Print Exhibition held in Warsaw in 1933, and is said to have been a highly praised work there. The subject is an adaptation of a motif that appears frequently in Western paintings, and even the feathers of the parrot and each individual pomegranate are carefully depicted.
