Miniatures Collection Butterfly Stool
For over 20 years, the Vitra Design Museum has been creating miniatures of historic furniture designs from its collection. From Art Nouveau to Bauhaus designs, and from postmodernism to contemporary works, the lineup covers the history of furniture. The Miniature Collection, which is a 1/6 scale reproduction of the original works, faithfully reproduces every detail, including structure, materials, and color. With a high level of detail, including reproductions of parts such as screws, natural wood grain, and handcrafted craftsmanship, the miniatures are not only collector's items, but also important reference materials for universities, design schools, and architects. In the 1940s, while still a student, Sori Yanagi traveled around Japan with Charlotte Perriand and experienced modern Western lifestyles. This may have sparked Sori Yanagi's interest in chairs. Sitting directly on tatami mats was traditional, and even urban homes were commonplace, with no chairs, which was unusual in Japanese culture at the time. Considering the situation at the time, Sori Yanagi's Butterfly Stool is exceptional. It takes a familiar Western shape and combines it with the techniques of molded plywood adopted by Charles and Ray Eames. Two pieces of molded plywood are connected symmetrically by two screws under the seat and a brass rod, creating an ingenious structure. It is reminiscent of a Shinto shrine's torii gate, giving it an oriental atmosphere. At the same time, it was named the "Butterfly Stool" because it recalls the wings of a butterfly.
