For over 20 years, the Vitra Design Museum has been creating miniatures of historic furniture designs from its collection. The lineup covers the history of furniture, from Art Nouveau to Bauhaus designs, and from postmodernism to contemporary works. The Miniature Collection, which is a 1/6 scale version of the original, faithfully reproduces every detail, including structure, materials, and color. With a high level of detail, including reproductions of parts such as screws, natural wood grain, and handcrafted craftsmanship, the miniatures are used not only as collector's items, but also as important reference materials for universities, design schools, and architects. Gerrit Rietveld considered each part of furniture to be an ideal, abstract combination of spatial surfaces and lines. His masterpiece, the Red and Blue Chair, which rigorously demonstrates his philosophy, has become an icon of modern furniture design. The abstract form incorporated in this chair is a contrast to the painter Piet Mondrian. Mondrian, and later Rietveld, were among the artists and architects who flocked to Theo van Doesburg and his magazine De Stijl, whose radical ideas had a lasting impact on 20th century art. Rietveld reduced all objects to lines and surfaces. Just as Mondrian modelled his work on landscapes, Rietveld took a large old armchair and transformed it into a geometric entity.
