The ceramic Vaiweisukko piggy bank was inspired by the ancient Finnish tradition of placing wooden statues outside churches to collect money for the sick and poor. The company envisioned the statue as a symbol of the Finnish season of Kaamos, the polar night. This period, when the sun does not rise even during the day, is extremely cold and the most difficult time for the sick and poor. The Vaiweisukko piggy bank is one of seven ceramic accessories designed by the company for Artek's FIN/JPN Friendship Collection. Because each piece is handmade, its shape, size, and color may vary.
