Shigaraki ware tableware. It can be used as a pitcher or a vase, serving fruit-filled sangria. Typical of KIGI (Ryosuke Uehara/Yoshie Watanabe), whose work is based on graphic design, these pieces feature simple designs composed entirely of straight lines, almost as if molded from paper. They are exceptionally thin and lightweight. Approximately 2.5 million years ago, the present-day Shigaraki region was submerged under Lake Biwa. Sediment and plankton accumulated at the bottom of the lake rose up, and over the course of 2.5 million years, the clay that formed became clay, forming the material for Shigaraki ware. The linear rigidity, the soft impression of ceramic, and the color of the glaze, which was repeatedly adjusted, create a unique texture, resulting in a unique quality that cannot be achieved with porcelain. The manufacturing process required extensive trial and error to recreate the thinness and angle of paper. This shape was only possible thanks to Shigaraki clay, which is fire-resistant and well-suited for creating large objects. The engraved number 670.25 represents the area of Lake Biwa.
