White small plate
Shigaraki ware tableware. Arranging small portions of side dishes creates a sophisticated kaiseki (traditional Japanese kaiseki) dining experience. Typical of KIGI (Ryosuke Uehara/Yoshie Watanabe), whose work is based on graphic design, the tableware features a simple design composed entirely of straight lines, almost like molded paper. Its exceptional thinness and lightness are characteristic. Approximately 2.5 million years ago, the present-day Shigaraki region was submerged under Lake Biwa. Sediment and plankton accumulated at the bottom of the lake rose up, and over the course of 2.5 million years, the clay that formed became clay, forming the material for Shigaraki ware. The linear rigidity, the soft impression of ceramic, and the color of the glaze, which was repeatedly adjusted, create a unique texture, resulting in a unique quality that cannot be expressed with porcelain. The manufacturing process required extensive trial and error to recreate the thinness and angle of paper. This shape was only possible thanks to Shigaraki clay, which is fire-resistant and well-suited for crafting large objects. The engraved number 670.25 represents the area of Lake Biwa.
