How High the Moon
One of Kuramata Shiro's masterpieces. This chair is an essential piece in the history of 20th century design, and is part of the collections of major art museums around the world. It is made of expanded metal, which is often used on construction sites. It is a material that had never been used for furniture before, and it expresses Kuramata's characteristic "lightness" and "transience." It takes a highly skilled craftsman to weld the ends of the metal together and finish it into the shape of a traditional armchair. Kuramata also intended for it to be a chair that could be "sat on," rather than just a decorative piece. It has not been manufactured since 2009, but has been reissued by Gallery Tamura Joe. Sempre is involved with this chair as a manufacturer, and it has a plate with a serial number. [Designed in 1986]
