This is the "1006 Navy Chair," an aluminum chair by Emeco, manufactured for the U.S. Navy in 1944. The Navy Chair, a culmination of the latest industrial technology, was created in 1944 by Emeco in response to a request from the U.S. Navy for chairs to be used on submarines and aircraft carriers. The chair's stability, strength, rust resistance, and light weight were essential for the constantly unstable conditions of use on the ocean. It also needed to withstand prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. This chair was designed with practicality in mind. The 100% aluminum Emeco chair is made from high-quality aluminum. The uniquely formulated aluminum alloy is lightweight, strong, and extremely durable. Furthermore, aluminum's softness and neutral appearance complement any interior, from classic to modern. The Emeco chair exudes the warmth and presence of handcrafted craftsmanship, making it a rare handmade product in the United States. Each chair is meticulously crafted by skilled artisans, exuding a sculptural form, warmth, and presence. The standard brushed finish (matte) retains the warm texture of hand-brushing. The polished finish (mirror/glossy) takes approximately eight hours to polish, resulting in a deep sheen that is no exaggeration to call a work of art. Emeco chairs are lightweight yet three times stronger than steel, thanks to their simplicity born from the skill of veteran craftsmen. Their quality and reliability are supported by a unique manufacturing process and process that utilizes superior craftsmanship. Even the simple structure of the NAVY 1006 requires 77 steps to complete. This unique manufacturing process, known as 77 STEPS, is the foundation of the "Navy Chair" and is used in other emeco chairs. Creating New Values : Aluminum is easily recyclable, requiring only 5% of the energy consumed to produce metal. Approximately 80-85% of the aluminum used in emeco chairs is recycled aluminum. 60% of the material comes from recycled aluminum beverage cans, and the remaining 40% is recycled industrial scrap. A design inspired by hip-shape. The aluminum "Navy Chair," made for U.S. Navy submarines, features a seat contoured to fit the human buttocks. Its distinctive shape is said to have been inspired by the hips of Betty Grable, the model for one of the most widely displayed "pin-up girls" posters during World War II. Renowned designers and architects were involved in the design . After being used as a naval chair for decades following World War II, it suddenly became apparent in the mid-1990s that this chair was being used in numerous famous buildings in the United States and abroad. Without any marketing efforts from the factory, renowned architects began using this aluminum chair due to its design and historically proven functionality and durability. In 2000, emeco welcomed its first designer, Philippe Starck, to the company, introducing a new aluminum chair. This was followed by a string of classics, including the Hudson Chair, which was soon added to the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection. Over the next decade, architect Frank O. Gehry and other renowned designers designed aluminum chairs for the company. Source: https://www.truss.jp/
