Hibiya Clock Diameter 20.4cm
"The problem was how to respond to the stately architecture. This was my masterpiece, and was praised by the elder architect Yosaku Matsumoto (advisor to Dai-ichi Life), Yoshiro Taniguchi, and Masaru Katsumi." The pole clock (1972) at Dai-ichi Life's headquarters, which still stands at Hibiya Crossing, is a masterpiece acknowledged by both Watanabe and others. Its extremely simple and powerful design, pared down to the bare essentials, along with its high legibility, has become a model for public clocks. In 2012, marking the 40th anniversary of the clock, a personal-sized version was redesigned and added to the Lemnos collection as the new "Hibiya Clock." It is a timepiece with a definite presence.
