This is the Ulm Stool, designed by Max Bill. In 1953, the Ulm School of Design, established in Ulm, West Germany, was an innovative educational institution that carried on the ideals of the Bauhaus. Max Bill, its first rector, designed this versatile stool in 1954 for his students. The Ulm Stool was created by incorporating multiple functions into its design, such as a stool for work tables, lectures, and cafe terraces, a side table, an easy-to-carry object, and a tray for books. At the Ulm School of Design at the time, it was used in a wide range of settings, not only as a chair but also as a side desk, a stepping stool, a rack when turned sideways, and even upside down for carrying textbooks. This "Ulm Stool," which combines durability and comfort, is made using a joinery construction method that uses no nails. Various techniques such as "dovetail joint," "interlocking joint," and "wedge joint" are used, and hard wood (beech wood) is used for parts requiring strength, demonstrating attention to detail. Unlike the unpainted standard model, the colored models use solid birch wood, which is scratch-resistant. After being stained to highlight the wood grain, they are finished with clear urethane. Its minimalist design, stripped down to the bare essentials, is said to be an iconic stool that directly inherited the concepts of Bauhaus.Source: https://metrocs.jp/
