Ulm Stool Walnut Ulm Stool Walnut
This is the walnut version of the Ulm Stool, designed by Max Bill. In 1953, the "Ulm School of Design" opened in Ulm, then West Germany, as an innovative educational institution that inherited the principles of the Bauhaus. Max Bill, its first rector, designed this multi-purpose stool in 1954 for the students. The "Ulm Stool" was born by integrating various functions into its design: a stool for worktables, lectures, or café terraces, a side table, a portable item, and even a tray for books. At the Ulm School of Design at the time, it was used in a wide range of ways, functioning not only as a chair but also as a side desk, a step stool, a rack when placed on its side, and even for carrying textbooks when inverted, exactly as intended by its design. This "Ulm Stool," which combines durability and comfort, is constructed using joinery without a single nail. Various techniques such as "dovetail joints," "interlocking joints," and "wedge-dovetail joints" are employed. Unlike the unpainted standard model or color models, all parts of this model are made from walnut. The surface is finished with clear urethane, giving it a luxurious and beautiful appearance. Its minimalist design, stripped down to the bare essentials, is said to be an iconic stool that directly inherited the concepts of the Bauhaus.Source: https://metrocs.jp/
