ROBIN DAY Series E Side Chair Linking
"Series E" is a stackable chair made of injection-molded polypropylene, designed by Robin Day, a master of British modern design. This affordable yet stylish British school chair was designed in 1971 by Robin Day, a leading British designer of the mid-century period, also known as the British Eames. Ergonomically designed for school chairs, it combines durability and safety. Its quality, meeting strict European standards for educational chairs, ensures a thoroughly low-cost design without feeling cheap. More than 50 years after its design, it continues to be loved around the world. This is a linking type chair that can be connected side-by-side. The connection method, unique to Robin Day, allows adjacent chairs to be connected simply by dropping them into the linking hardware, and then removed by simply lifting the chair off the linking hardware. The seat is made of high-quality polypropylene, which combines moderate impact resistance and durability. The distinctive rounded rectangular hole in the center of the chair facilitates portability and reduces the amount of polypropylene used, resulting in a lighter chair. The PP (polypropylene) used for the shell was a cutting-edge material at the time. In 1963, Hille and Robin Day developed the first injection-molded polypropylene chair and achieved mass production. This product, along with the Series E, was what led Robin Day to be dubbed the "British Eames." While injection-molded chairs are now commonplace and PP chairs are commonly seen in everyday life, the Series E, which was light, durable, and available at an affordable price from its time, can be said to be a product that embodied the design philosophy of Robin Day, who popularized modern design.
