These pieces utilize the traditional Japanese craft of "magewappa." Magewappa is crafted by bending a single sheet of Akita cedar in boiling water to create ohitsu (rice containers) and tea caddies. Using unpainted Akita cedar creates a unique texture and fragrance that stimulates both the visual and olfactory senses. Artist Tani personally creates not only the design, but also all processes, from bending, gluing, and assembly. "Most Japanese interior design is imported, and traditional Japanese crafts are on the decline. People overseas are buying these traditional Japanese crafts, re-importing them back to Japan in new forms," he says. He wondered why people living in Japan don't notice the "good things from Japan" that are so close to them. He wanted to raise awareness of traditional Japanese crafts through his own work. In fact, he himself traveled to Akita to train in traditional crafts and encountered the tradition of "magewappa." While traditional interior design has traditionally been visually stimulating, he has created an interior that engages two of the five human senses: olfactory information through the materials used in "magewappa" and the aroma of Akita cedar.
