This piece is made using the Suruga Bamboo Senjiki technique. Suruga Bamboo Senjiki is a traditional craft passed down in Shizuoka Prefecture that involves weaving various patterns into insect cages, lanterns, and other items made entirely from bamboo. Thin, rounded strips of bamboo are bent flexibly and then woven into bamboo rings to create the desired shape. Approximately 600 strips of bamboo are used. This process requires an incredible amount of intricate skill and effort, but it is only thanks to the craftsmanship that has been passed down for many years that it has been possible to achieve this flawlessly.
