WAPPA SHADE Kazaguruma-floor
This piece utilizes the traditional Japanese craft of "magewappa." Magewappa is crafted by bending a single sheet of Akita cedar in hot water to create rice containers and tea caddies. Using unpainted Akita cedar creates a unique texture and fragrance that stimulates both the visual and olfactory senses. Artist Tani personally created the entire process, from the design to the bending, gluing, and assembly. The floor lamp, which comes with a silver stand, easily integrates into modern spaces, making it a familiar addition to everyday decor. "With most Japanese interior design being imported, traditional Japanese crafts are on the decline. People overseas are purchasing these traditional Japanese crafts and re-importing them back to Japan in a new form." I wondered why people living in Japan don't notice the fine Japanese products that are so close to home. I wanted to raise awareness of traditional Japanese crafts through my own work. In fact, I went to Akita to train in traditional crafts and experienced the tradition of "magewappa." Until now, interior design has only been visual, but with the scent of Akita cedar, a material used in magewappa, we have created an interior design that stimulates two of the five human senses.
